The Poulenc Trio has collaborated with renowned artists such as violinist Hilary Hahn, clarinetists David Shifrin and Anthony McGill, and poet Lia Purpura, blending classical music with diverse artistic expressions. Their recordings, including Poulenc Plays Poulenc, Creation, and Trains of Thought, have been featured on NPR's Performance Today and are regularly broadcast worldwide.
Celebrating over two decades of redefining chamber music, the Poulenc Trio stands as one of the most innovative and sought-after ensembles in the classical world. Named after the French composer Francis Poulenc, whose 1926 trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano remains a cornerstone of the repertoire, this ensemble has captivated audiences across 47 U.S. states and international festivals such as Italy's Ravello Festival, Mexico's San Miguel de Allende Festival, and Russia's White Nights Festival.
The trio's performances have garnered critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising their "elegant rendition" of Piazzolla's tangos and The Washington Post commending their "intriguing and beautifully played program" that exuded "convincing elegance, near effortless lightness, and grace." Their commitment to expanding the chamber music repertoire is evident in their commissioning and performance of over 25 new works, including triple concertos for trio and orchestra, showcasing their dedication to pushing the boundaries of their ensemble's capabilities.
As part of the North Carolina Museum of Art’s esteemed Sights & Sounds on Sundays series, the Poulenc Trio promises an afternoon of refined artistry and engaging repertoire. Their program will feature a blend of classical masterpieces and contemporary works, reflecting their dedication to both tradition and innovation. This concert offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich textures and dynamic interplay that define the Poulenc Trio's performances.
