In 2024, Poiesis won the Louis & Susan Meisel Competition, positioning them among the most promising chamber groups in North America. Currently, they serve as the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, studying under the Ariel Quartet. They also hold an ensemble-in-residence position with concert:nova, a Cincinnati-based collective known for interdisciplinary performances.
POIESIS QUARTET
As part of the North Carolina Museum of Art’s popular Sights & Sounds on Sundays series, the Poiesis Quartet promises an afternoon of innovative and emotionally stirring chamber music. Their program will feature both classical masterpieces and contemporary works, reflecting their dedication to expanding the traditional quartet repertoire. This is a performance not to be missed by chamber music enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
presented by the Ellen Black Winton Concert Fund
The Ellen Black Winston Concert Fund supports one concert in each of Chamber Music Raleigh's seasons. As one of the company's founders in 1942, Mrs. Winston organized an endowment fund for the organization in 1972 and made a bequest establishing the concert fund upon her death in 1984. She left a legacy that continues to bring music and education to the capital city.
A social worker, a writer and editor, she also served as U.S. commissioner of welfare in the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Read more about her amazing career by clicking here.
The North Carolina-based artists in the Sights & Sounds Series appear as part of collaborative effort with the North Carolina
Arts Council and 78 local arts agencies statewide. Artists are selected by CMR's programming committee.
The Poiesis Quartet is rapidly emerging as one of the most compelling young ensembles in chamber music today. Founded in 2022 at Oberlin Conservatory, this dynamic group has already garnered significant acclaim, including the 2025 Banff Internation String Quartet Competition Grand Prize and the 2023 Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, along with the Senior Strings Gold Medal and the Lift Every Voice prize for outstanding performance of a work by a historically underrepresented composer. They also clinched the Gold Medal and BIPOC Prize at the 2023 St. Paul String Quartet Competition.
