“The Turtle Island Quartet has earned rave reviews for their jazzy take on traditional chamber music and their classical take on traditional jazz.” — NPR

David Balakrishnan
violin

Each member is a classically trained string player and a serious improviser, giving Turtle Island performances the spontaneity of jazz and the refinement of chamber music. Their collaborations have included artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, The Manhattan Transfer, Terence Blanchard, Stefon Harris, Leo Kottke, the Assad brothers, and the Ying Quartet.

For this NCMA performance, expect a concert that is virtuosic, soulful, and alive with invention—music that honors the string quartet’s classical roots while opening the door to the full sweep of American musical imagination.

Two-time Grammy Award winner Turtle Island Quartet brings its unmistakable fusion of classical quartet tradition, jazz improvisation, American roots music, and contemporary sound to Chamber Music Raleigh’s Sights & Sounds on Sundays series at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Founded in 1985, Turtle Island has spent more than four decades redefining what a string quartet can be. Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, the ensemble has built a singular voice by combining the precision and beauty of the classical string quartet with the rhythmic life of jazz, bluegrass, rock, swing, global traditions, and original composition.
